The Half-Day Tour of Cape Sounion begins with a scenic seaside drive along the Coast of Poseidon, following the Aegean Sea as it borders the Attica region from southwest to southeast. Along the way, you’ll glimpse Salamis Island, the site of the historic Naval Battle of Salamis between the Greeks and Persians, which ushered in the Golden Age of Athens. The drive continues to the Marina of Zea, once a key grain supply port for ancient Athens (famed for its Zea bread), and now one of the most exclusive yacht marinas.
Our first stop offers a short break above the upscale residential area of Kastela in Piraeus, known for its castle-like apartments. From here, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Athens’ coastline and the picturesque leisure port of Microlimano below—an excellent spot for photos.
We then continue along the coastline, passing key venues from the 2004 Olympics, including the Beach Volleyball and Tae Kwon Do stadiums, near an old marina housing decommissioned ships from 1956 and a replica of the ancient warship Trieres, known for its speed and three rows of oars.
As we drive past the old Athens airport and several marinas, we reach the luxurious coastal area of Vouliagmeni (“the sunken”). Known for its healing waters at Lake Vouliagmeni, this area boasts several beaches and resorts along its stunning peninsula, marking the end of the Coast of Poseidon.
Beyond the bustling urban areas of Athens, we enter the serene Coast of Apollo, where the sea turns a vivid blue. Here, locals and visitors alike relax in charming seaside spots, offering a countryside atmosphere while still being within the capital.
At Cape Sounion, our final destination, you’ll have 45 to 60 minutes to explore the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon, perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. The archaeological site includes the ancient town’s fortified walls, the Propylea (main entrance), and the remnants of the town’s shipyard and loading bays.
The tour concludes with a scenic drive back to your hotel or cruise ship terminal, retracing the same stunning route. As the sun sets, you’ll witness a breathtaking scene with rays of purple light reflecting off the sea, and the towns and villages illuminated in the evening glow. There’s also an option to stop for dinner at a local seaside restaurant.
